EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
