'Candy game'
Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, detailed the criminal behavior to the court.
She stated his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a summer camp which he ran.
Ruben conducted a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel said, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".
She told the court Ruben had conducted this practice with the children "for many years", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the following morning.
She explained Ruben had been able to explain this for many years as the minors being "overexcited from fun", until his family member had suspicions in summer 2025.
Mrs Prior KC stated further: "This year his family member had concerns about the situation, with valid cause.
"They resolved" to investigate in the man's possessions."
The prosecutor said items including infant oil, Vaseline and syringes were located, and his stepchild alerted the law enforcement about his worries.
She explained Ruben continued to conduct the "sweet game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.
"The police had not arrived by that point," she continued.
The regulatory agency, the investigative body, had stated that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.
The legal representative explained the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so the stepson called the authorities once more.
She explained the defendant then played the "sweet game" in a room of five youngsters.
